Blog #3, July 3rd - My latest writing goal

I have a problem. I started a three part fantasy series, finished the first two books in the series, and then got a contract with Featherweight Press for Hush Puppy .  Just a slight six month distraction there.  Now I need to finish last book of the Storyteller series. Readers have been asking about it, so it will be the next project.  No matter that I have two other books that could use editing.  Storyteller Book Three comes first.
Unfortunately, with two young kids and a full time day job, writing often comes last.  I’m not really a night owl, so staying up late to work on it is not really an option.  So I told myself- write a chapter a week- and in twenty weeks or so, the first draft will be done.  It‘s been going pretty well. I’m still on track so far. This week is Chapter Six.  If only I could up that to a chapter a day, I’d have it made!
How do you stay on track and find time for writing/reading?  Here's a little trivia for you...know what library this is??  :)

  1. You should be proud of yourself Lisa for being able to write books and still take care of your family. I admire your goal of writing a chapter a week. I just watched the trailer for your first book, looks very intriguing. I am going to put it on my book list. Is that the New York Public Library?

  2. Thanks for stopping by Sheri. My family might have something to say about being "taken care of" ;) My house isn't the cleanest in the world, but I figure the dirty dishes will be there tomorrow, right? I hope you enjoy the read~

No, not the the New York library, but physigraphically kinda close....anyone? anyone? :D

  3. Hi Lisa. How do I stay on track and find time for writing, reading? Easier for me as I don't have family and live alone. Having said that I often stray from my desire to do it. The things that keep me coming back to writing are the feedback I get, creating accountability with other people to send them my work and 31 day challenges really help too.I read at night in bed and over meals (living alone helps here too). Not sure that late night is the best time for anything except novels, often can't recall what I've read the night before.

    1. Feedback is so critical at times. It's easy to think no one is reading what you write when all you hear is silence. I am learning that the majority of readers don't give any feedback at all and I have to accept that. I know I don't write to every author of every book I've written :) But every now and then, someone will say something that makes me realize, I am reaching people in some small way. That's what keeps me going.

  4. Well, since no one guessed the name of the library yet, I'll just tell you. It's the very lovely Library of Congress in Washington D.C. I can think of a few members of Congress who should use it more often :)

  5. I wouldn't have gotten the library right so I guess it's I'm that I popped by after the reveal. I'd love to share a tip I have for keeping my writing on track but I don't have one. I'm 3 chapters in and going nowhere fast. I'll keep checking on your blog for inspiration but for today I'm just committing to the 31 days of blogging. Some writing is better than no writing :-)

    1. I struggle to write a little every day too. I've just learned to accept the fact that I write slowly, my books take time - a lot longer than most folks.

Are you the type of writer that outlines? Or are you a pantser? You know,a seat of the pants type writer? I used to just start off without a plan ready and I'd end up flailing all over the place. When I started "outlining" I did much better. Because I had a plan in place ahead of time, I knew where the story was supposed to go. It helps tremendously. Good luck and I'll see you around the blogs!
